Paxton animal shelter says it’ll rebuild after fire

Sweetpea Friends of Rutland Animals, the central Massachusetts animal shelter severely damaged in a fire in November, is in the early stages of planning to rebuild. More than 50 cats and dogs died in the blaze.

Shelter officials recently told Paxton selectmen they plan to build 20 indoor/outdoor dog kennels separated by concrete walls, a preparation area, a grooming area, and a lobby with restrooms. Cats would be housed in smaller rooms.

The plan also includes a fire alarm and protection system and a schedule for volunteers that would include mandatory nighttime checks on the animals.

Sweetpea is a nonprofit, no-kill shelter.
