Boston College has named US Energy Secretary Ernest J. Moniz as its spring commencement speaker.

Moniz, who earned a degree in physics from BC in 1966, joined President Obama’s Cabinet in 2013. A nuclear physicist, he developed impressive scientific and policy credentials over several decades as an MIT professor and administrator.

Among his recent initiatives, the Fall River native served as the Obama administration’s nuclear science point man for the high-stakes negotiations with Iran.

About 4,000 students are scheduled to graduate during the ceremony May 23 at Alumni Stadium.

BC will confer honorary degrees on Moniz and four others: Nannette Canniff, founding president of St. Boniface Haiti Foundation; John “Jack” Joyce, managing director of Deutsche Asset and Wealth Management, and chairman of the Boston College Club; María Eugenia “Gena” McGowan, principal of St. Matthew Catholic School in Phoenix; and the Rev. Emmanuel Mwerekande, a priest at Our Lady of Fatima parish in Uganda.
