Boston firefighters battled a brush fire in the Fenway that scorched an area of reeds along the Muddy River and sent plumes of smoke into the air that could be seen around the city.

Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said the blaze broke out at 2:19 p.m. in an area off Park Drive and extended over to the Fenway side.

Firefighters brought the blaze under control and were staying on the scene to put out hot spots.

MacDonald said a Boston police officer was transported by medical crews.

“It is one of three areas where we get brush fires every year,” said MacDonald. “The blaze broke out in an area of reeds that are six to seven feet tall.”
