Bruins legend Ray Bourque was arrested on a charge of drunken driving in Andover on Friday night after his Mercedes SUV struck a minivan, according to Andover Police.

Bourque, 55, of Boxford, was charged with operating under the influence of liquor, and with following too closely to another vehicle, police said in a statement issued Saturday night.

Bourque was driving a Mercedes-Benz GL450 through a construction zone on Route 133 at about 11:30 p.m. when it struck the rear of a Toyota Sienna minivan, the statement said.

The driver of the minivan was not identified. There were no injuries in the accident, Andover Police Lieutenant Cecilia Blais said Saturday night.

Andover police responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash in the area of 5 Lowell St., which is Route 133.

The officer, who was not identified “spoke to the operator of the Mercedes, identified as Bourque,” the statement said. “He determined that Bourque was intoxicated and placed him under arrest.”

Bourque was booked at the Andover Police Department and released on bail.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Lawrence District Court.

Bourque, a Hall of Fame defenseman, played 21 seasons for the Bruins and was its longest-serving captain. He was a five-time winner of the Norris Trophy, presented annually to the top defenseman in the National Hockey League.

He finished his career in the Colorado Avalanche, with whom he won the Stanley Cup in his final NHL game in 2001. The Bruins retired Bourque’s uniform number 77 later that year. Since 2005, Bourque has been a consultant to the Bruins coaching staff, and remains active in team-related charities.

Matt Chmura, a Bruins spokesman, declined to comment on Saturday night.
