A wrong-way driver crashed into another car on Interstate 495 in Mansfield early Wednesday in a collision that killed the operators of both vehicles, according to State Police.
The woman, a 24-year-old from Middleborough whose name was not released, was driving in the opposite direction of traffic on the southbound side of I-495 at around 2 a.m., State Police said in a statement.
Her Nissan Sentra crashed head-on into another car in the middle lane of the highway near Exit 13, State Police said. The driver of that car, a 27-year-old man from Taunton, and the woman were both pronounced dead at the scene.
There were no passengers in either car, State Police said.
State Police are still investigating the collision and haven’t determined where the woman got onto the highway or how long she had been driving the wrong way.
The collision left all but the breakdown lane closed, but police said all lanes had reopened by about 6 a.m.
