An alligator spanning 6 feet and weighing up to 200 pounds was recovered from a backyard in West Springfield on Thursday, police said.
Representatives from Springfield’s Forest Park Zoo were among those who corralled the alligator, which was being kept in a fenced-off area in the backyard, said West Springfield Police Sergeant Nolan Ryan.
The reptile is currently being held at the zoo, said Ryan, and Massachusetts Environmental Police are spearheading the investigation into the alligator’s presence in the yard. Ryan was unsure if the incident would prompt any charges, and deferred comment to Environmental Police.
Ryan said police were receiving reports that the alligator had been living at the Main Street residence for 26 years, but could not confirm they were true.
