Worcester firefighters recover body from Coes Pond

Scuba divers with the Worcester Fire Department recovered the body of a 49-year-old woman from Coes Pond Friday morning, officials said.

Investigators believe the woman died in an accidental drowning, according to Worcester police.

Police were notified Thursday evening that the woman was missing and had last been seen at the pond. She had not been seen since 7 a.m. that day.

Officers searched the area and couldn’t find her, police said. Police officials asked the fire department, which has a scuba team, for help with the search.

Firefighters began a search around midnight, said Deputy Fire Chief John Sullivan. After a short time, the search was postponed until morning for the safety of the divers and because the search was “a recovery mission, not a rescue.”

The body was found at 9 a.m., Sullivan said.

The woman’s body was taken to the chief medical examiner’s office and will be examined to determine the exact cause of death, police said.
