How some popular restaurants fared on their latest food safety inspections

The following list shows how a group of popular Boston restaurants performed during their most recent inspection cycle. When a restaurant falls short, even slightly, on an initial inspection, city officials usually require it to be re-inspected over the course of days or a few weeks until problems have been fixed. The table below shows the date of the most recent initial inspection for each location, and the score each establishment would have earned at that visit, based on the formula the city plans to use for its upcoming restaurant grading system. The graphic also shows how many followup visits city inspectors made before determining each location had corrected previous violations. Eventually, every restaurant on this list corrected enough of the violations from the initial inspection to bump their score up to a 94 or higher. A score of 94 or higher translates to an A letter grade, according to a new rating system the city is expected to implement soon. A score of 81 to 93 would be a B. A score of 80 or lower would be a C. The city says restaurants that get a B or C on initial inspection will be allowed one reinspection to boost their mark before it is posted publicly. The city also says it has no plans for numerical scores to be posted publicly.

How we determined 'most popular' restaurants: The Globe developed the above menu of some of the most popular restaurants in Boston by using lists provided by two well-known websites. Yelp based its list of the 100 most in-demand restaurants by using an algorithm that considered both the number of reviews and the star rating for each location. Separately, Foursquare compiled a top 100 list based on restaurants where people most often check in. Both sites excluded major national chain restaurants from their lists, and the final result was trimmed further by the Globe to account for locations that appeared on both lists and others for which no inspection data was available, including because they are new, recently went out of business, or are located just outside the city’s border.
