A small private plane experienced engine problems and had to make an emergency landing on a sandbar in the Quabbin Reservoir Tuesday afternoon, State Police said.
The sandbar is in the northern portion of the reservoir that is part of New Salem.
The pilot told State Police that he was having engine problems and had to make an emergency landing at about 2:52 p.m. just northwest of Mount L, according to Dave Procopio, a spokesman for State Police.
Procopio said the man was the only occupant of the plane and was not hurt. Troopers helped him get ashore.
The plane landed upright on its wheels, Procopio said. The only damage to the plane was associated with the engine problem.

Procopio said the Federal Aviation Administration was notified, and its investigators will decide whether the plane can be repaired to fly away or will have to be removed by a different method.
