Police are investigating an anti-Semitic message that was written on the softball field at Marblehead High School last week.

The message, which read “Jews did 9/11,” was found Aug. 18 after the school’s principal reported a rock had been thrown through his window, according to Marblehead Police Chief Robert Picariello. While an officer was inspecting the window, a custodian informed the officer what had been inscribed in the dirt of the softball field.

Picariello said they are unsure if the two incidents are related.

The New England office of the Anti-Defamation League issued a statement Wednesday decrying the message.

“This type of attack warrants condemnation by the entire community,” the ADL wrote. “We remain extremely concerned by the surge in anti-Semitic incidents this year, especially in schools, and will continue to partner with local communities, schools districts and law enforcement.”
