Man arrested in fatal Mattapan hit-and-run

State Police arrested a Dorchester man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash Saturday night in Mattapan that killed a 46-year-old woman, they said in a statement Sunday.

Anthony E. Buchanan, 39, struck the woman, identified as Johnette R. Sims, at the crosswalk at the intersection of Morton and Canterbury streets at 10:30 p.m., according to State Police spokesman David Procopio.

He then stopped briefly before driving away toward American Legion Highway, Procopio said.

Investigators found that his vehicle, a 2016 Dodge Charger, had been rented from Enterprise Rent-A-Car in Dorchester and identified Buchanan as the renter.

State troopers and Boston police officers did not find Buchanan or the car at his Dorchester address, but Buchanan later turned himself into Boston police around 1 a.m., Procopio said.

The car was found on Mt. Pleasant Street in Boston and will be processed for evidence, he added.

He was charged by State Police with several offenses, including motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of liquor, leaving the scene of a crash that caused personal injury or death, and speeding.

Buchanan is being held at the State Police barracks in Milton and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Boston Municipal Court in West Roxbury.
