Beginning at midnight, marijuana will officially become legal in Massachusetts. But, since retail sales of the drug won’t be allowed until at least January 2018, the commonwealth has found itself in a legal grey zone. So, what happens if you’re stopped by police and you’ve got marijuana?

It depends how old you are—and how much you’ve got.

In a letter to the State Police released Wednesday, the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security outlines in specific detail what’s legal and illegal under the new law created by Question 4. The state secretary of public safety and security cautions that the guidelines aren’t intended to direct law enforcement efforts, but to provide clarity about changes to Massachusetts law.
