A Stop & Shop worker died in a fall Tuesday morning at a company distribution center in Freetown, authorities said.
Alphonse Ferent, 51, of Stoughton, was killed when he fell between a loading dock and a tractor trailer as the vehicle pulled away from the dock and a forklift then fell on him, law enforcement officials told the Associated Press.
Attempts to reach local police and fire officials, as well as the Bristol County district attorney’s office, for further comment were unsuccessful on Tuesday night.
Philip Tracey, a Stop & Shop spokesman, offered condolences to Ferent’s family in a statement but did not provide details about the incident.

“Tragically, an associate was fatally injured,’’ Tracey wrote. “We offer our deepest sympathy to the associate’s family and friends and are doing everything we can to support them during this very difficult time. ... We are working closely with local and state officials as they investigate the cause of the accident.”
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is also investigating, a spokesman for the federal agency said.
“The inspection will seek to determine whether any workplace safety standards were violated,” spokesman Ted Fitzgerald wrote in an e-mail.
