Average pay per worker, by department
Figures are for 2016, rounded to the nearest whole dollar, and include base wages and pay from overtime, buyouts, and other forms of compensation.

Why is the State Police pay average so much higher? Overtime and detail pay are major factors. State Police officials say troopers are often needed to work overtime to respond to public safety emergencies, like violent crime investigations and missing person searches. Officials also note that detail work is often paid for by private companies that procure police services for security at events. Staff who work a private detail are paid for their work by the department which gets reimbursed by the company.
