The Boston Police Department issued an alert to officers this week after discovering that the personal vehicles of four officers had been tampered with, according to a police spokesman.
An off-duty officer drove into work recently, then realized the lug nuts on the wheels of his vehicle had been loosened, said Lieutenant Detective Michael McCarthy. Police were issuing the alert to ensure that officers are aware, he said.
“We’re looking at it to see if the officer was targeted,” Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans said Friday during a news conference about Super Bowl Sunday.
McCarthy said the incident occurred at the officer’s home, and it was “definitely intentional.”

It is unclear what specifically happened to the other officers, but McCarthy said their personal vehicles were also tampered with;.
Investigating the incidents will “be tough,” he said because there is little in the way of evidence.
