Major gas leak in Providence closes parts of I-195
A major natural gas leak in downtown Providence snarled traffic on Interstate 195 for several hours Wednesday night.
The leak came from a steel pipe at a National Grid take station in Franklin Square, said Danielle Williamson, a company spokeswoman. It was contained just before midnight, she said.
No injuries have been reported, Williamson said.
East and westbound lanes on Interstate 195 closed from Gano Street to Interstate 95 and the Rhode Island Department of Transportation urged drivers to seek alternate routes.
Customers reported smelling gas in the area around 8:15 p.m., Williamson said.
Crews arrived on scene at around 8:40 p.m. and are investigating repair options, she said. There is not an estimate when they will be done.
There have been no service interruptions as a result of the leak, Williamson said.
The cause of the leak has not yet been determined, she said.
