Despite rain, drought conditions persist for much of the state

Though the dreary weather and massive puddles forming on the sidewalk may suggest otherwise, more than half of the state is still dryer than usual, according to the US Drought Monitor.

As of Tuesday, 16.7 percent — a swath of central and western Massachusetts — remains in “moderate drought.”

Another 50 percent of the state is “abnormally dry.”

In late September, 52 percent of the state was in extreme drought, which is the highest level of drought, according to the drought monitor, a collaboration between government and academic researchers.
