The older brother of Aaron Hernandez sent out birthday wishes to their mother Thursday, as the family continued to grieve the death of the convicted killer and former New England Patriot one day before.

In a brief Facebook posting, Jonathan “DJ’ Hernandez wrote to Terri Hernandez, “Happy B-Day Mom! I love you and I know if Aaron was here one more day he would have said he loves you too. Keep smiling because I know Aaron & Dad are both smiling down on us right now.”

Their father, Dennis, died when Aaron was 16.

The note from Jonathan Hernandez came hours before Worcester District Attorney Joseph D. Early Jr.’s office announced that the state medical examiner had ruled Aaron Hernandez’s death a suicide.

He was found hanging in his cell by a bedsheet early Wednesday at Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center, where he was serving a life sentence for the June 2013 fatal shooting of Odin Lloyd.

A Suffolk County jury had acquitted Hernandez last week of killing Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in a drive-by shooting in July 2012 in Boston.

Court filings in the double murder case suggested that the relationship between Aaron Hernandez and his mother had become strained while he was incarcerated.

During one jailhouse conversation in 2015, Hernandez told his mother, “There’s so many things I’d like — I would love to talk to you [about] so you can know me as a person,” a legal filing said. “But I never could tell you, and you’re going to die without even knowing your son.”

His mother responded by saying that Hernandez was “a big gossiper, too” and added: “You would always tell me the bad things. Oh, my God, such bad things.”

Hernandez denied that and told his mother not too speak that way “on this phone.”

Terri Hernandez replied: “Well, not bad. I did it raw — but whatever does that mean?”
