Man in Chelsea standoff presumed dead

A man is presumed dead after shooting at Chelsea police officers Monday night and then barricading himself in a house in that city, officials said.

The house the man was in during the tense standoff on Warren Avenue caught fire, prompting police to evacuate neighbors.

“I can confirm the shots fired at Chelsea officers,” State Police spokesman David Procopio said early Tuesday in an e-mail. The suspect then fired “additional shots subsequently at numerous officers from Chelsea, surrounding towns and state troopers,” he said.

He said Revere police tried “to negotiate with suspect but got no response. Suspect presumed dead. We know there were two family members, and adult female and a child in the house at some point but we confirmed that they got out of the house and were at a different location.”

Late Monday night, Chelsea Police Chief Brian Kyes posted on Twitter that the active “shooter who resides at the Warren Ave. home is still in the residence. His condition is unknown.”

The home was fully engulfed in flames, Kyes wrote. A woman and her 10-year-old daughter were not home at the time and were safe, he said.

State police posted that the street had been evacuated and that negotiators were attempting to establish communications with the suspect.

“Police have home surrounded,” they wrote.

A Revere police negotiator was “continuing to attempt contact w/armed suspect inside house,” State Police tweeted around 11:15 p.m. “Heavy fire showing in house.”
