Man struck and killed by police cruiser on Cape Cod

A man was struck and killed by a police cruiser early Sunday morning in Barnstable, according to police.

The man, who was not identified, was in the street near 1358 Falmouth Road when the cruiser hit him at about 2 a.m., State Police said in a news release. He was not in a crosswalk, according to State Police.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, said Barnstable Police Detective Sergeant John York. The officer, who was also not identified, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Cape Cod Hospital.

The officer was responding to a call and the cruiser’s lights and siren were on at the time of the crash, State Police said.

The cause is under investigation by State Police and Barnstable police. Collision reconstruction is expected to take several weeks to complete.
