A man died early Friday morning after the car he was driving crashed into a utility pole and flipped on its roof in Auburn, police said.

Auburn police and fire responded shortly after midnight to the single-car crash on Wallace Avenue, according to a statement posted by the Auburn Police Department on its Facebook page.

The driver, who was not identified, was trapped in the vehicle. The crash also caused electrical wires to fall into the street, police said.

“The operator was trapped in the vehicle and efforts were immediately undertaken to remove him in order to render lifesaving medical care,” the statement said.

The driver was taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:18 a.m., according to the statement.

The crash is being investigated by an officer with the Central Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council crash reconstruction unit, police said.

Auburn police and fire officials would not comment further later on Friday.
