Fliers stating ‘ICE is coming for you!’ found near Somerville school

Fliers stating “ICE is coming for you!” were found near a Somerville school with a sizable Latino population earlier this week, prompting a police investigation, a City Hall spokeswoman said.

Between 10 and 12 of the handwritten fliers were found on a sidewalk Wednesday afternoon near East Somerville Community School, a K-8 school on Cross Street, said city spokeswoman Jackie Rossetti.

A parent notified school staff of the fliers, the staff then notified the superintendent’s office, and that office told police.

The fliers read: “ICE is coming for you! Be Prepared Now Prepare your family Now!”

ICE is an apparent reference to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Somerville has been a sanctuary city for 30 years.

Mayor Joseph Curtatone said he was outraged about the incident.

“It’s a reminder, and it reinforces that hatred and bigotry exists everywhere, even in progressive cities like Somerville,” he said in an interview Friday night. “We need to be vigilant.”

Police were canvassing the area in search of who made the fliers, but the probe was not yet considered a criminal investigation, said Rossetti.

Ivan Espinoza-Madrigal, the executive director for the Boston-based Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Economic Justice, said in a statement that the fliers “foster a climate of fear that interfered with students’ social and academic progress.”
