Springfield police arrest 15 in drug raid

Springfield police arrested a suspected drug dealer and 14 customers Friday evening and seized more than 420 bags of heroin and other drugs, along with $1,575 in cash, police said.

Melha Ali Harris, 54, was arrested at about 6:40 p.m. at 110 Haskin St., a house where he was living, said Captain Brian Keenan, the narcotics unit commander for Springfield police.

The alleged buyers were also arrested at the house, which “had been a source of numerous neighborhood complaints,” Keenan said.

“It’s a major quality of life bust,” he said Saturday. “The people in that neighborhood can sleep better tonight.”

Police confiscated 420 bags of heroin, 26 grams of cocaine, 2.5 grams of crack, 5 pills of oxycodone, and 6 strips of suboxone, he said.

Harris is being held on $50,000 bail and is expected in Springfield District Court Monday on multiple counts of drug distribution charges, Keenan said.

The 14 buyers range in age from 24 to 52 and live in Agawam, Chicopee, Greenfield, East Longmeadow, Ludlow, and Springfield, according to police.
