A woman died in an apartment fire in Melrose Wednesday afternoon, officials said.
Melrose firefighters responded around 4 p.m. to the blaze on the first floor of a wood-frame duplex at the corner of Grove Street and Walnut Street, said Captain Ed Collina.
Firefighters found the woman dead after forcing their way into the home, he said.
Two adults who live in an apartment on the other side of the building were displaced, Collina said.
Melrose police alerted drivers via social media at 4:40 p.m. that Grove Street between Main Street and Lebanon Street was “impassable” due to the fire.
The fire remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s office and the Melrose Fire Department.
Jennifer Mieth, a spokeswoman for the fire marshal’s office, said Wednesday evening that she did not yet have any information on the cause of the fire.
Meghan Kelly, a spokeswoman for the Middlesex District Attorney’s office, said in an e-mail that the victim was not yet being identified.
