Gonzalez snags nod from former Patrick ally

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jay Gonzalez has picked up an endorsement from an activist legendary in party circles for her canvassing prowess.

Kate Donaghue, a state committee member from Westborough who was a key volunteer for Gonzalez’s old boss, former governor Deval Patrick, called Gonzalez “exactly the right candidate we need to take on” Governor Charlie Baker next year.

In turn, Gonzalez, in an e-mail from his campaign, said, “There is no one more committed to Democratic ideals and values than Kate.”

Donaghue’s door-knocking zeal has made her something of a mythical figure within the state party. In 2013, as a volunteer, she canvassed 53 consecutive days on behalf of Democratic US Senate candidate Edward J. Markey, who won the special election.

Gonzalez is one of three Democrats seeking the nomination against Baker, a Republican who has not yet formalized his reelection bid. Newton Mayor Setti Warren and environmentalist and entrepreneur Robert K. Massie are also running for the Democratic nod.
