An off-duty Webster police officer died early Saturday morning after his car hit a tractor-trailer stopped in the breakdown lane on Interstate 395 in Auburn, according to State Police.

Troopers from the State Police Barracks in Sturbridge responded to reports of a crash on the southbound side of Exit 6 around 1 a.m. Police said Michael Lee, 38, crashed his 2015 Toyota Tundra into a 2012 Freightliner, and he was pronounced dead on the scene.

On Facebook, the Webster Police Deparment identified Lee as one of their officers who was off-duty at the time of the crash. “He was an outstanding officer, SWAT operator, investigator, and person,” they wrote. “He will be missed by not only his colleagues in law enforcement, but by the community he served.”

The driver of the tractor-trailer was in the cab when his vehicle was hit, State Police said in a statement, but was not injured. The statement said the tractor-trailer driver, who it didn’t identify, was a 50-year-old man from Central Islip, N.Y..

The right lane remained closed until around 6:40 a.m. while the scene was cleared. State Police said the crash is under investigation.
