The weekend-long project to replace a bridge on Route 3 in Braintree was completed early Monday, in plenty of time for the morning commute.
The state Department of Transportation hoped to have the work done by 5 a.m., according to MassDOT spokesman Patrick Marvin. The work was complete around 1 a.m., he said.
The bridge, on the other side of the Braintree split, carries Route 3 south over a ramp for Interstate 93. A similar bridge on Route 3 north was replaced last month.
The “accelerated operation” saw demolition of the existing bridge and placement of prefabricated steel beams and concrete deck panels over the weekend, according to MassDOT. Work began Friday at 10 p.m.
MassDOT has been using that method recently during a number of bridge-replacement projects.
The project had a price tag of $6.3 million, according to MassDOT.Sean Smyth can be reached at email@example.com. Follow him on Twitter @smythsays.
