Mass. rounds up state’s 26 pitches for Amazon’s new headquarters

The state of Massachusetts has listed 26 sites, including some that have not previously gotten much attention, as possible locations for the new Amazon headquarters that communities around North America are hoping to attract.

The document submitted Thursday was less of a specific bid than a proposal that makes the general case for the state as the new headquarters location.

“Massachusetts has all the sites Amazon needs from A to Z,” said the 182-page document, which is available on a special website pitching the state’s attractions to Amazon. “The following pages represent submissions made directly to Amazon. We are committed to supporting Amazon in finding the site in Massachusetts that works best.”

The state’s list began with the site in East Boston that many see as the front-runner. But it also included other communities across the state, from Pittsfield in the west to Lawrence in the north, Leominster in the central part of the state, and New Bedford in the southeast.

The city of Boston submitted its bid Thursday for the new $5 billion “second headquarters” that is expected to provide a massive economic boost wherever it lands. The city touted the region’s brainpower and focused on the East Boston site, where the Suffolk Downs racetrack is soon to be closed to make way for development.

The state’s document opened with a message to Amazon from the governor, lieutenant governor, and legislative leaders.

“On behalf of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, we are excited to invite Amazon to locate its second headquarters in Massachusetts. As you know from your existing operations here, Massachusetts offers an innovative culture led by worldclass research institutions and universities, a growing economy that succeeds because of productive collaboration between government and private industry, and an exceptional collection of development sites that meet all of Amazon’s needs for its HQ2,” the message said.

Here is a list of the possible Boston sites floated by the state:

■  Suffolk Downs, East Boston

■  South Boston waterfront

■  Allston/Brighton to South Station Corridor

■  Harrison Albany Corridor comprised of Widett Circle, the South End, Roxbury, and the Back Bay

And here are the other communities around the state suggested as possible sites:

■  Lawrence and four neighboring communities.

■  Everett (Exxon Mobil site)

■  Foxborough (Patriot Place)

■  Lowell, Billerica, and Tewksbury (Riverview Business Park)

■  Lynn

■  Peabody

■  Quincy (Fore River Shipyard)

■  Somerville

■  Weymouth and two neighboring communities (Union Point)

■  Waltham

■  Fall River

■  New Bedford

■  Taunton

■  Gardner

■  Leominster (Mall at Whitney Field)

■  Marlborough (Campus Drive)

■  Worcester

■  Northborough (Crossroads Business Park)

■  Westborough (former EMC/Dell campus)
