Boston schools Superintendent Tommy Chang will receive a 2 percent pay raise under his latest job review, which was unanimously adopted by the School Committee Wednesday night.
That review, which was first presented to Chang earlier this month, rated his overall performance for his second year on the job as proficient, bumping up his pay by $5,243 to $267,383.
Chang’s contract entitles him to a 2 percent pay raise if he receives a proficient rating on his job review — the second-highest of four possible ratings. It is the second year in a row the committee has given a proficient rating to Chang, a former Los Angeles school administrator who never previously served as a superintendent.
The increase, which is retroactive to July 1, is smaller than what teachers are receiving this year. Under a two-year union contract approved last month by the School Committee, teachers will receive a 3 percent raise this year and a 2 percent retroactive raise for last year.
The School Committee, which evaluates Chang’s performance following specific state rules, did not discuss Chang’s performance Wednesday night. That conversation occurred earlier this month, but Chang said at the meeting he appreciated the feedback.
The review judged Chang’s performance in four categories mandated by the state: instructional leadership, management and operations, professional culture, and family and community engagement.
Chang received mostly proficient ratings in those categories, except for family and community engagement, where he was largely deemed in need of improvement.
Across the state, more than 80 percent of school administrators received overall ratings as proficient, according to the most recent state data, which is for the 2015-16 school year. Slightly more than 16 percent received exemplary ratings; 3.2 percent were deemed in need of improvement.James Vaznis can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
