Fall River woman killed in hit-and-run crash on Westport highway

A Fall River woman who may have been running on a highway in Westport was struck and killed by a vehicle in a hit-and-run crash Saturday night, according to police.

Westport police said a motorist reported seeing the 48-year-old woman running on State Road near White’s restaurant around 9:34 p.m. Within minutes, another caller told police the woman was on the ground receiving cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

In a statement, police said the woman was found unresponsive and was declared dead at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River where she was taken for treatment. Police didn’t immediately identify the woman.

The vehicle that struck the woman did not stop. But an hour after the incident, a caller told police of possibly “hitting a deer,” according to the statement. The caller, a woman who police also have not named, identified her car and its location in Fall River. Police said damage to the car matched vehicle debris at the site of the crash.

State Road near the Fall River-Westport line was shut down in both directions for roughly four hours after the incident, which remains under investigation, according to the statement.
