Westwood student, one other pedestrian seriously injured in crash

Two people, including a Westwood public school student, were seriously injured in a crash Sunday in what police called a “terrible tragedy.”

The crash occurred around 3 p.m. when a car struck several pedestrians in the crosswalk at Pond Street and Lakeshore Drive in Westwood, police said in a statement. Two of the pedestrians were taken to separate Boston hospitals with “varying degrees of very serious injuries.”

Police would not release the identities or ages of the victims, but Westwood Public Schools Superintendent Emily Parks said one of them is a student in the district.

“All of us in the Westwood Public Schools are sending our thoughts and prayers to the affected family. We want to respect the family’s privacy and as much as possible provide our students with a sense of stability and support,” Parks said in a statement. The school system will be bringing in counselors throughout the week to assist students and families, she said.

Police said the crash appeared accidental, but “no final determination can be made about what charges, if any, will be filed,” Chief Jeffrey Silva wrote. Officials provided no further information as of Sunday night.

“On behalf of the entire Westwood Police Department, we are hoping and praying for everyone involved and affected by this terrible tragedy,” police said.
