Brandeis to review safety protocols in wake of lockdown

Brandeis University will review its safety protocols after two men, one of them armed with a handgun, menaced three students in their dormitory room, an act that triggered a campus-wide lockdown that lasted about two hours.

Campus police were alerted to an armed robbery that took place in the East Quad Monday night and police activated security protocols that included the lockdown. “Armed subject on campus—Take shelter—lock doors, windows, silence cell, remain quiet,’’ the university tweeted. “Don’t let anyone in room until okayed by authorities.”

The lockdown was lifted around 2 a.m. when a campus wide search ended without discovering any of the suspects, according to a statement issued by the school Tuesday.

Three students were in a dormitory room when the two men, who are not students, entered the room, according to the statement signed by Public Safety Director Edward Callahan and Jim Gray, vice president of campus operations.

“One [suspect] threatened three students in the room with a gun, and then both fled campus,’’ the statement reads.

University police have since concluded the incident was linked to at least one of the students, and that there is no campus wide security threat, according to the statement.

“No one was hurt, and based on the initial investigation it appears this was not a random incident,’’ the statement reads. “Police are continuing to investigate this incident but there is no indication of any continuing risk to our community.”

The school is operating on a regular schedule Tuesday.

The officals said in the statement they will launch a review of how people gain access to university dormitories. “Campus Police will be reviewing residence hall safety protocols in light of this incident,’’ the officials said.
