Man charged in violent attack on woman and setting fire at Lynn home

A 54-year-old man was arrested Wednesday night and charged with violently attacking a woman and setting his house on fire in Lynn.

Lynn firefighters put out the fire and rescued two pigs from the home on Glenwood Road on Wednesday night. The homeowner was arrested at the scene and charged with arson, aggravated rape, attempted murder, and violating a restraining order, among other charges, police said.

“We have a serious violent incident that occurred,” said Lynn Police Lieutenant Michael Kmiec. “A lot of things are being investigated at this time.”

The homeowner, Michael Comeau, was ordered held without bail during his arraignment Thursday in Lynn District Court. A dangerousness hearing was scheduled for Dec. 11, the Essex district attorney’s office said.

The female victim is recovering from serious injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening, according to police.

Lynn District Fire Chief Stephen Archer said firefighters were called to 47 Glenwood Road around 8:16 p.m. and found clothing and household goods burning in the basement.

They also found two pigs in the house, and both animals got out safely.

“They were unharmed,” said Archer. “They’re fine.”

The smoky basement fire was put out quickly and the animal control officer handled the pigs, according to Archer.

“The fire was a quick knock-down,” said Archer.

The fire is being investigated by the state fire marshal’s office, he said.

Archer said he couldn’t comment on the domestic incident.

According to city assessor records, Comeau owns the three-bedroom, single-family home at 47 Glenwood Road.

Kmiec said Comeau is facing “numerous charges,” including arson of a dwelling, mayhem, attempted murder, assault and battery causing bodily injury, violating a restraining order, and aggravated rape.
