Water main break in Newton causes shutdown

Officials plated a water main break in Newton early Saturday and will repair it Sunday evening, officials said on Twitter.

Newton Department of Public Works tweeted at 7:17 a.m. that a water main had broken in the area of Needham Street and the Avalon apartment complex.

There was no water showing on the street by Saturday afternoon, the department tweeted in an update at 12:40 p.m. The break will be repaired Sunday “due to the size of the main and all the business.”

“We have staff checking it hourly to make sure it stays safe for the traffic and pedestrians,” the tweet said.

Earlier, the water main leaked onto the street and was contained to the gutter line of the road, the department said in a Twitter update at 8:21 a.m.
