A leisurely ride through the snow took a treacherous turn Wednesday when a Massachusetts man’s brand-new snowmobile suddenly burst into flames on a trail in New Hampshire.
The man escaped without any injuries, but his snowmobile was destroyed by the fire, according to the Wolfeboro Fire-Rescue Department.
Wolfeboro Fire-Rescue learned of the fire at 12:57 p.m. and arrived at the scene four minutes later, finding the snowmobile fully engulfed in flames.
Wolfeboro Fire-Rescue posted a photo of the burning snowmobile on Facebook and wrote that they got the fire under control by 1:36 p.m. and cleared the scene just after 2 p.m.
The operator told authorities that he’d purchased the 2018 Ski-Doo Renegade the day before, and he’d been heading north on the Cotton Valley Rail Trail when it caught on fire.
Wolfeboro Fire-Rescue wrote that the cause “appears accidental in nature” and the incident is under investigation.
