Transformer explosion causes widespread power outage in Cohasset

A transformer explosion knocked out power to over half of National Grid’s customers in Cohasset Friday night, according to police and online outage maps provided by the company.

Cohasset police said on Twitter at 7:37 p.m. that the explosion of a transformer on Route 3A by Lower King Street had caused a “Widespread power outage.” National Grid crews were en route, police said.

Some 2,150 customers — about 56 percent of all National Grid customers in Cohasset — were still without power more than two hours later, according to an online outage map. That number had fallen to 343 by 11:30 p.m.

Restoration for the remaining customers was estimated for 1 a.m. Saturday, according to National Grid’s website.

A National Grid spokesman did not respond to requests for comment.
