A snowy owl died after being hit by a motorist inside the O’Neill Tunnel Wednesday night, officials said.

Massachusetts Environmental Police officers found the owl near the Government Center exit and captured it without incident, police said in a statement. The animal was taken to Tufts Wildlife Clinic at Cummings Veterinary Medical Center just before 10 p.m. for treatment, and died a few hours later, said Maureen Murray, assistant director of Tufts Wildlife Clinic, in a statement.

“The owl was very dull on admission, and was not appropriately responsive to its environment. It also had an open wound on its foot,” Murray said.

The Wildlife Clinic will be performing tests to determine possible underlying causes for the owl’s death, she said.
