A 100-foot-tall tree crashed into a 2½-story Newton home Thursday morning, leaving a hole in the roof, officials said.
The tree came down at 4:30 a.m. into 315 Woodward St., the result of more storm damage, said fire Captain Eric Fricke. The family was home, but everyone made their way out of the house without injuries by the time fire officials arrived, he said.
“The tree just snapped off at the trunk,” he said. “It fell into a corner of the house.”
The fire department has received about 100 reports of downed wires and trees since 6 p.m. Wednesday night, Fricke said.
“We try to make sure people know to assume all downed wires are lives wires, call 911, and stay away,” he said. “For the most part people have followed that advice.”
The Department of Public Works is working to clear the roads, and the streets have improved considerably, Fricke said.
“But the snow is so wet and heavy that it’s a real problem for the utility and tree crews,” he said. “That’s our goal today — to put eyes on each and every one of the reports.”Elise Takahama can be reached at email@example.com. Follow her on Twitter @elisetakahama.
