If you’ve recently lost a key — not to a car or an apartment, but to an entire city — then North Adams police might have what you’re searching for.
In a statement posted to Facebook, North Adams police said they are searching for the owner of a large golden key to the city of Worcester that was found in their town earlier this week. The key has a heart-shaped handle, and its teeth are printed with a large W.
“We are attempting to locate the owner of this key which was found in our city yesterday,” the statement said. “If you have any information regarding this item, please contact the North Adams Police Department.”
North Adams police declined to comment further on the key, citing an active investigation.
Like many other cities, Worcester has a longstanding tradition of honoring exceptional citizens with keys to the city, from famous visitors to crossing guards.
This case of the key found in North Adams is emblazoned with the name of Mayor Andrew Holstrom, who led the city from 1950 to 1953 and would have been responsible for presenting the key.
Whoever owns the key can claim it from police, or they can just buy a new one on eBay, where a user who claims it was presented to Duke Ellington is selling a ceremonial key for $100 plus shipping.Laney Ruckstuhl can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
