Body found burning in Western Mass. field

Police in the small Western Massachusetts town of Hatfield found a dead body on fire in a field Saturday night, according to a spokeswoman for Northwestern District Attorney David E. Sullivan.

Hatfield police received a report of a fire off Bridge Lane in the town and arrived about 9:30 p.m. to find the burning body, Mary Carey, the spokeswoman, said in a statement Sunday.

No information about the person’s identity was released. The cause of death will be determined by the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Carey said.

State Police detectives attached to the district attorney’s office are investigating the discovery with help from Hatfield police and the State Fire Marshall’s office.

Hatfield is a rural community in Hampshire County, just north of Northampton. Its population in 2010 was 3,279, according to the US Census Bureau.
