One dead in Palmer apartment building fire

One person died as a result of an early-morning fire at an apartment building in Palmer, state fire officials say.

Jennifer Mieth, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Fire Services, said the fatal fire started around 2 a.m. Thursday at 15 Springfield St. in the Three Rivers section of Palmer. The victim was an adult, and the fire is under investigation.

“We are working with the Three Rivers Fire Department, Palmer Police and the Hampden District Attorney’s Office to determine where and how the fire started,” she said in an e-mail to the Globe.

Palmer police Chief John J. Janulewicz said 11 people live in the building, which sustained “very extensive” damage.

“Currently, it’s an active investigation,” he said.

A section of Springfield Street was closed to traffic Thursday morning because of the fire, he said.

At least 15 people have died in fires in Massachusetts this year, including a father and his two children who perished in a Springfield apartment blaze.
