Commonwealth Avenue will be closed for more than 2 weeks this summer — again

Boston commuters, consider yourself warned: Commonwealth Avenue is going to be closed again this summer for more than two weeks, and traffic there and on the Massachusetts Turnpike could get unwieldy as a result.

Massachusetts Department of Transportation officials will announce Monday the exact days during which the thoroughfare will be closed to traffic this summer due to construction at the Commonwealth Avenue bridge, which is located near the Boston University Bridge.

The expected traffic comes as part of an ongoing $110-million project to replace and refurbish the bridge. MassDOT plans to close both the Boston University bridge and Commonwealth Avenue between Packard’s Corner and Kenmore Square for 15 1/2 days while workers demolish and replace the westbound side of Comm. Ave.

The closure is a continuation of last summer’s construction, when the bridge was closed for more than two weeks at the end of July and the beginning of August. Last summer’s construction led to headaches for commuters, mainly due to traffic on the Mass. Pike as a result of lane closures.

During the work this summer, pedestrians and bicyclists will be able to access both the bridge and Comm. Ave., and MBTA buses will be allowed to travel along the avenue, according to a project plan on MassDOT’s website. However, cars will not be allowed to travel on either, and the Green Line’s B branch will be replaced by shuttle buses between the Babcock and Blandford street stops.

Traffic on the Pike will also likely be impacted, as the highway will be reduced for 9⅓ days to one or two lanes in both directions between the Allston interchange and the Beacon Street overpass, officials said. The Mass. Pike eastbound on-ramp from Cambridge Street/Soldiers Field Road will be closed, and the Exit 20 off-ramp to Brighton/Cambridge/Storrow Drive will also be closed intermittently, officials said.
