A 36-year-old Scituate man suffered minor injuries in a rollover crash in Cohasset early Monday morning that he said was caused by a steering wheel malfunction, police said.
The man’s 2008 BMW was “destroyed” in the 1 a.m. accident, Cohasset police said in a tweet. He was driving near 441 North Main St. at the time, said Police Chief William Quigley.
“He says the steering wheel locked up on him and he went off the road,” Quigley said. “He hit a rock, which caused the car to go up on two wheels, then it flipped over twice.”
The man was very lucky, Quigley said, and only suffered a few bumps and bruises.

After investigating, officials found the man was initially going southbound on Main Street, crossed over the double yellow line, and hit a rock on the northbound lane, which caused the car to flip over, Quigley said. Quigley said he wasn’t sure how the rock got in the road.
Officials cited him for a marked lanes violation and an unregistered motor vehicle before he was taken to South Shore Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.
No further information was immediately available.
