East Boston High athletes awarded full scholarships
Two East Boston High School students were surprised with full-tuition scholarships Tuesday for their academic and athletic achievements, Scholar Athletes announced.
Representatives from Curry College and Regis College surprised seniors Kayla Elliott and Juliane Jorge with the four-year scholarships, Scholar Athletes said in a statement.
Scholar Athletes has 23 high school Athlete Zones across Massachusetts to work with students on athletics, academics, and planning for college. Both students are members of the East Boston High School Athlete Zone and were nominated for the scholarship through the program.
“We are very proud of these two young women and all that they have accomplished,” said Daphne Griffin, Scholar Athletes executive director, in the statement. “They both represent the best of Scholar Athletes and of the Boston Public Schools. They have truly earned these scholarships and this recognition.”
Elliott is a National Honor Society member, captain of the varsity softball team, and has a 5.2 GPA. She will attend Curry College and plans to study nursing. Jorge is also a member of National Honor Society, captain of both volleyball and basketball, and has a 5.05 GPA. She will attend Regis College.
“Kayla and Juliane have worked incredibly hard to earn this accomplishment,” said Tommy Chang, Boston Public Schools superintendent, in the statement. “Their success in the classroom and in athletics prove what is possible when young people are supported by caring adults.”
