Six injured, one seriously, after head-on crash between SUV and MBTA bus in Saugus

Six people were injured in a head-on crash between an SUV and an MBTA bus in Saugus Sunday afternoon, Transit Police said in a statement.

The collision occurred in a residential area near 190 Essex St. around 3:50 p.m. Sunday, when a Ford SUV struck a northbound Route 429 MBTA bus that was heading toward Lynn with four passengers aboard.

The SUV, driven by a 37-year-old woman and originally traveling in the lane opposite the bus, may have struck a parked vehicle, “causing the Ford to veer into the MBTA’s bus lane of travel striking it head on,” police said in the statement.

Following the crash, the bus driver and all four passengers were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries. The driver of the SUV was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The accident remains under investigation by Transit Police detectives.
