A black bear made its way up a large tree in Newton and perched on a branch for several hours on Tuesday night, officials said.
The animal was spotted in the tree near 1320 Centre St. — and close to the Green Line tracks — around 9 p.m., but climbed back down sometime during the night and moved on, said Newton police Lieutenant Bruce Apotheker. It didn’t come into direct contact with anyone and no injuries were reported.
“We contacted the environmental police, and they said, ‘Leave it alone, and hopefully it’ll come down during the night,’ ” Apotheker said. “And it did.”
Police monitored the situation for a couple hours to move people out of the area, but eventually cleared the scene and allowed the bear to climb back down on its own, Apotheker said.
“The frequency has increased over the years,” he said. “We never used to get so many calls like this.”Elise Takahama can be reached at email@example.com. Follow her on Twitter @elisetakahama.
