Girl, 16, found with loaded 9mm pistol during traffic stop in Dorchester

A 16-year-old girl was arrested on gun possession charges after police officers allegedly found a loaded 9mm handgun stuffed into her purse during a traffic stop in Dorchester early Wednesday, Boston police said.

The girl’s name was not released because she is 16 years old, police said, but she will face unlawful carrying of a loaded firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm, and other charges in Roxbury Juvenile Court, police said.

According to police, officers stopped the vehicle on Sargent Street for a motor vehicle “equipment violation” around 1:27 a.m. Wednesday. “When the officers approached to speak with the passenger, they observed a firearm sticking out of her purse,’’ according to a posting on

The firearm was described by police as a 9mm Hi Point C9 handgun, which had been reported stolen by its legal owner, police said.

The teenager was arrested without incident.

The driver was issued a citation for a motor vehicle violation and released, police wrote.

“I find it deeply troubling to see a young girl out so late, on a school night no less, carrying a loaded gun, either for herself or holding on to it in order to take the blame for someone else,’’ Boston Police Commissioner William B. Evans said in a statement.
