A major teachers union is endorsing Jay Gonzalez in his effort to unseat Governor Charlie Baker.
The American Federation of Teachers Massachusetts is giving the Democrat the nod, with its president saying Gonzalez has “an aspirational vision for an education system that gives every student the resources they need to succeed.”
The state AFT represents more than 25,000 public school employees, higher education faculty and staff, and public librarians.
Asked whether the group would be spending money on the governor’s race, Steve Crawford, a spokesman for the group, responded in a statement.
“The AFT is fully committed to Jay’s election. That includes communicating with our members and targeted independent expenditures,” he said.
Baker faces anti-gay pastor Scott Lively in the GOP primary. Gonzalez is battling environmentalist and entrepreneur Bob Massie in the Democratic primary.
The primary election is Sept. 4, the day after Labor Day.
