Officials searching for vehicle that dropped steel on I-93, puncturing tires of 13 vehicles

Police are investigating the source of a large piece of steel that was found on a Stoneham highway and punctured the tires of 13 vehicles Thursday morning, officials said.

Police were notified of the metal debris on Interstate 93 north just before 5 a.m., said State Police spokesman Tom Ryan. All the vehicles were towed, but no crashes or injuries were reported, Ryan said.

Jacquelyn Goddard, a Massachusetts Department of Transportation spokeswoman, said she believes the steel fell off a truck. The vehicle has not been identified, she said.

Officials temporarily shut down the right lane near Exit 37, so MassDOT could clear the debris away, Ryan said.

All lanes were reopened just before 6 a.m.
