A Bridgewater man allegedly sexually assaulted a woman as he attempted to abduct her into his car during her morning jog on Sunday, but she managed to fight him off, police said.
Gordon J. Lyons, 57, was arrested a short time after the incident when police used a photo of his car the victim managed to capture and used it to identify his vehicle in a car crash that followed the alleged attack, Bridgewater police said in a statement.
Police said they received multiple 911 calls at about 7:35 a.m. reporting that a woman was assaulted while jogging near 433 Pleasant St. in Bridgewater. The suspect fled the scene in an orange Hyundai Santa Fe, police said.
During an investigation, police learned that the 37-year-old woman had been jogging down Pleasant Street when the suspect, identified as Lyons, pulled over in the Hyundai and stopped in front of her. Lyons got out of the car, ran toward her, and grabbed her arms in an attempt to pull her toward his car. Police said Lyons sexually assaulted the woman during the struggle.
The victim screamed and fought with Lyons, causing them both to fall to the ground, police said. Lyons got back up and ran to his car, then drove away.
The victim declined medical attention, police said.
Police said a passing driver witnessed the incident and followed Lyons by car while calling 911. The victim also called the police. A second witness saw the struggle from inside a nearby home and assisted the victim after the alleged attack, police said.
Using a photo of the vehicle provided by the victim, police quickly identified Lyons’ car and tracked it down on Route 24 in West Bridgewater when he was involved in a car crash shortly after, police said.
Lyons, 57, was charged with kidnapping, indecent assault and battery on a person age 14 or older, and assault and battery, police said.
Lyons was injured in the accident and was taken to a local hospital before being transferred to Boston Medical Center, where he remains in custody of Bridgewater police. Police said Lyons is held without bail pending his arraignment.
